EFFECTIVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING & ASSESSMENT

Process or Result?

Posted on: January 16, 2011

After joining PETA course which discussed about assessment, I have concept that assessment is a tool to gauge the development of students in learning and to know whether or not the instruction is effective.  The word “assessment” comes from Latin language “assidere” means “to sit beside”. It is an indicator that in assessing students, the teacher has to guide them in various ways to make students understand. That is the process of learning and it is because learning itself is a process. Then, I agree about the concept of assessment as learning because the assessment here really helps students to learn. With other words, the assessment is not being something frighten for students. In assessment as learning, the teacher helps students in learning with assessment along the process of learning. I remember something then. I often hear the sentences “The process is more important than the result”. In learning, many people think so.  Many people protest to government like the final examination that only done with paper and pencil test is not good because it does not consider the process. So, it is not fear to judge students fail or not just based on the final examination without considering the process of them in learning. But, my question is “Is process more important than result?”

The assessment as learning allows students to improve understanding with teacher guidance. I think it is appropriate because the main purpose of learning is being successes to understand. When student is good in process of learning, then is not good in production of result, isn’t it fair thing to judge that student is fail? I think the process, including assessment during it, have to make students be able to be successes in the result. So, there is no which one is more important between process and result.

i love your state ment about this
” assessment is a tool to gauge the development of students in learning and to know whether or not the instruction is effective”.
i wanna response you question
i mean both of them is important, but in my opinion process is more important than result . because in prosess we can learn more about something and finally we can get the result.

thank you iik.. 🙂
Yes, i believe in process, but sometime i also think that result is important because result should reflect the process 😀

I do agree, both of process and result are not a choice. In my humble opinion, too much focus on result (result oriented) some times make us become pragmatic. In the other side, the process without clear ending will take more time. The combination of them are the main point. The process need a clear result.

totally agree with you Siz.. that’s what i feel realy hard to say when i wrote this reflection. ” too much focus on result (result oriented) some times make us become pragmatic. In the other side, the process without clear ending will take more time.”

wow
so wise that you have positive point to both process and result…
yah..
i also think that those two things are related each another…
how come we could get a good result if the process is bed and otherwise..
very good point of view..
mmeeooww…

oh unie.. why you leave “mmeeooww..” in your comment? hehehe… funny…
ya, now, many people just debate about process and result in learning, which one is more important. I think, as teacher, it is our duty to make it clear, both are important, let’s refer to siz’comment 🙂
